Mansfield Trooper Makes Arrest in Stolen Mail Case

A local man is accused of stealing mail from several mailboxes in Mansfield and Chaplin.

According to Trooper Joshua Woodward, of the Mansfield Resident State Trooper's Office, Bassett stole mail from a number of residential mailboxes and used credit cards found within the stolen mail to make purchases.

Police believe Bassett then discarded the stolen mail in the state forest.

Bassett faces the following charges:

  • Four counts of operating a motor vehicle when registration or license is refused/suspended/revoked;
  • 12 counts of sixth-degree larceny;
  • credit card theft;
  • 12 counts of illegal use of a credit card;
  • 12 counts of receipt of money/goods/services by illegal credit card use;
  • 12 counts of identity theft;
  • 12 counts of criminal impersonation; and
  • seven counts of second-degree forgery.

Additional warrants against Bassett with similar charges are pending in other superior courts in the local area, Woodward said.

Bassett is currently being held on $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to next appear in Rockville Superior Court on Wednesday, March 14.
