Antiques auction, Atwood estate

Antiques Auction --- The Estate of Isabelle Atwood --- Wormwood Hill
Rd., Mansfield Center

Joshua's Trust is sponsoring an important auction on October 5 at the
Atwood Farm on Wormwood Hill Rd in Mansfield.  The auction,
coordinated by Russ Antiques & Auctions LLC, begins at 11:00 a.m.
with a preview the morning of the sale from 9:00-11:00. Additional
preview times will be October 3rd & 4th 10:00-4:00 p.m. The auction
will be an old fashioned on-site auction under tents at the Atwood
farm. All inventory is to be sold un-reserved. Funds raised by the
auction will be reinvested in the farm and a farmlife museum to be developed in the barn.  For full auction details, images, terms and conditions see www.russantiques.com

The Atwood family lived on Wormwood Hill from 1877, until Miss Isabelle
Atwood's death in August 2012.  They were a branch of the Atwood
family responsible for extensive mill development in northeastern CT.
She and her twin sister Harriet were well known residents, typically
appearing dressed alike in garments "Izzy" made for them.  Isabelle
Atwood was a founder and long-time trustee of Joshua's Trust.  Her
gift of her farm, 67 acres, the 1840's Atwood home, and an assemblage
of eleven 19th century farm buildings, will be preserved as a
historical and natural preserve with public access.  Deliberations
are under way to allow the Trust to occupy the house as its
headquarters.  Trust President Allison Burchell-Robinson praised the
generous gift:  "Izzy was a fixture in CT and in the Trust.  We miss
her energy and her knowledge, and we are pleased to memorialize her
through preservation of her generous gift."

The Estate of Isabelle Atwood features a large collection of American
antique furniture, accessories and art. Isabelle lived her entire
life at the farm and the collection represents a generational
accumulation with the large house, barn and various outbuildings all
filled with numerous items. The overall theme of inventory is country
New England with Windsor chairs, painted blanket chests, tavern
tables, tea tables, ancestral portraits, landscape paintings,
stoneware, etc. More formal items include Empire and Victorian
furniture, Oriental rugs, Victorian glassware, oil lamps, porcelain,
sterling silver, etc. There are numerous leather-bound books with
local history titles and textiles including multiple quilts,
coverlets, hooked rugs, etc. This sale includes everything from very
fine collector objects to dusty project pieces from the loft of the
barn.

This auction will be a rare event given the range and volume of
inventory. We encourage visitors to come to the in-house preview on
the 3rd and 4th to see the inventory in room settings and to fully
absorb the atmosphere as well as to have ample time to examine the
thousands of lots which will be offered at the auction. Isabelle was
an antique auction enthusiast her entire life and will be long
remembered for her passion and keen eye for American antiques.
