Bill to Add UConn Student to Trustees Passes House

State Representative Gregory Haddad (D-Mansfield), Vice-chair of the Legislature’s Higher Education & Employment Advancement Committee  is proud to announce that a bill to add an undergraduate student alternate to the University of Connecticut’s Board of Trustees has passed the House and is heading to the Senate for their consideration.

“This is an important issue. Students should always have a say in the decisions of their university and creating an alternate student rep position on the Board of Trustees supports that,” said Rep. Haddad. “I am happy to have co-sponsored this bill and voted in support and see the bill pass the House of Representatives.”

Rep. Haddad championed the bill after he was approached by the leaders of the student body, including the Undergraduate Student Government President, Ed Courchaine, the Chair of USG's External Affairs Committee and USG President-elect, Mark Sargeant, and the current Student Trustee, Michael Daniels.

"They made a compelling case that the student body would be well-served by the addition of another student voice at the Board of Trustees," Haddad said.

The alternate member will be able to participate in Board of Trustee meetings and will vote when the student Trustee is absent.

UConn’s 21 member Board of trustees will now include 12 gubernatorial appointees, two elected alumni representatives, the governor; UConn Health Center Board of Directors chairperson the commissioners of agriculture, education, and economic and community development, a graduate student, an undergraduate student, and once this bill is passed by the State Senate and signed by the Governor, an  undergrad student alternate. The student alternate must be enrolled full time at UConn for the duration of their two year term.
