Significant Snowfall Expected Saturday

The National Weather Service has announced a winter weather advisory for much of Connecticut, including Mansfield and all of Tolland County, on Saturday from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Snowfall is predicted to be between 3 and 6 inches. It will likely begin during the overnight hours from Friday into Saturday. The majority of snow will fall between the morning and early afternoon. It will taper off by Saturday evening. Other weather information outlets, including AOL Weather, are predicting between 2 and 4 inches.

Attendant hazards, including quick accumulation, slippery walking and driving surfaces due to ice and snow and drops in visibility to between half of a mile and a quarter of a mile are also expected during the storm.

While the National Weather Service warns that “the greatest risk for heavy snowfall” is in the local area, the weather system itself is still located over the northern Rocky Mountains.

“…A lot can change as the storm tracks across the country today and tonight before reaching southern New England [on] Saturday,” the NWS’ hazardous weather outlook advised.

The winter weather advisory covers a large swath of southern New England, including much of western Massachusetts and Rhode Island along with northern Connecticut.

More bad weather is in the forecast for Sunday night (a wintry mix) and Monday (freezing rain).

Relief from the accumulated snow and ice may come in the form of high temperatures predicted to be above 40°F on Monday and Tuesday.
