Mansfield has even more reasons to be proud after a local woman won the national Jenny Lind singing competition.

Kathryn Bowden, a 25-year-old soprano, was chosen over 10 other semi-finalists during the competition, part of the Barnum Festival in Bridgeport. Bowden is the U.S. winner, and will perform alongside the Swedish winner, Magdalena Risberg, at the festival on Thursday.

“I was very surprised,” Bowden said about being selected the national champion. “A lot of the other singers were older and attended really prestigious schools; Juilliard and Yale.”

Winning comes with a cash prize of $2,000, which Bowden says she plans to use while pursuing her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance at Florida State University in the Fall.

Born to a long line of Glastonbury residents, the current Mansfield resident said she began taking voice lessons when she was 10, when she was singing karaoke at a friend’s party and a parent noticed her talent and offered to introduce her to a vocal coach. She pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance and received a Performer’s Certificate degree from the University of Connecticut.

Singing, she said, has always been her calling.

“I think it’s the most beautiful way to express the feelings we have inside us,” Bowden said.

The Jenny Lind Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Bijou Theatre, 275 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For more information call 203-332-3228 or visit www.thebijoutheatre.com.
