Palestinian Theater Group to Bring 'The Island' to UConn

The show will be playing at UConn on Sept. 6 and 7.

The Freedom Theatre group will be performing Athol Fugard’s award-winning play “The Island” at UConn on Sept. 6 and 7, according to a press release sent to Patch.

The independent Palestinian cultural center, located in the West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp, is working with UConn drama professor Gary English to bring to life the story of two prisoners living during South Africa's apartheid era, the release said.

“The prison experience is one most Palestinians share, either by being imprisoned themselves or by having a loved one put in an Israeli prison,” said Faisal Abu Alhayjaa, one of the production’s two Palestinian actors and a resident of Jenin refugee camp.

The play can be seen at the Nate Katter Theatre of Connecticut Repertory Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 7.

Ticket information is available through the Friends of the Jenin Freedom Theatre at friends@thefreedomtheatre.org.
