"Who Gets To Call It Art?" is the subject of what promises to be a lively Friday Art Forum on November 4, 5-7 pm, at the William Benton Museum of Art on UConn's Storrs campus.
The discussion will consider the issues of putting a value on art, the process of choosing art for a collection or an exhibition, art that is mainstream vs. marginalized and contemporary vs. conservative.
Moderating the discussion is Anne D’Alleva, Interim Department Head and Associate Professor of Art and Art History and Women’s Studies at the University of Connecticut. She is author of Look! Art History Fundamentals and Look Again! Art History and Critical Theory, and has contributed to a number of exhibition catalogues on the discipline of art history. Her most recent book is Arts of the Pacific Islands (Yale University Press).
The panelists are Monica Bock, Associate Professor of Art at University of Connecticut, a sculptor and installation artist currently affiliated with Soho 20 Chelsea Gallery in New York City, and Steven Holmes, Curator of The Cartin Collection in Hartford, a former Curator of Real Art Ways in Hartford and the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach.
Admission to the Forum is free to Benton Museum members and $10 to non-members, and includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. An RSVP to 860.486.5084 is appreciated by Wednesday, October 31. For more information, visit www.thebenton.org/info_fridayforum.php
