UNESCO International Women’s Day Speakers:
Katia Barragan will speak about the perception of women in small villages in Peru. Katia has travelled to Peru, Spain, Italy, England, Serbia, Puerto Rico and France.
Colleen Phelan will speak about her experience in Costa Rica and the status of Nicaraguan women in Costa Rica. Colleen has travelled to and studied in both Costa Rica and Spain.
Sarah Purtill will speak about the activism of Irish feminist groups with a particular focus on the difficulty in obtaining a divorce and the marriage bar. Sarah’s mother and grandmother have deep experience with Irish feminist activist groups.
Surav Sakya will speak about his time in Nepal and the status of Nepali women today. Surav has spent considerable time in Nepal.
Claire Simonich will speak about gender inequality in the American workplace with a particular focus on the gender wage gap. She travelled to Guatemala and Spain and interned with the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities-Connecticut’s employment discrimination agency.
Nellie Stagg will speak about access to birth control and its effect on Guatemalan women. Nellie has travelled to Guatemala, Tanzania, and South Africa and is very active in women’s organizations domestically.
