5-8 PM

East Haddam children up to grade 8 are invited to trick or treat for candy and prizes at the 17th Annual Project Safe Halloween sponsored by the East Haddam Police Department.  While there, take a ride on the Halloween Hayride and enjoy time with your family and friends.

This is a community-wide event presented as a safe alternative to door-to-door trick or treating.  Please join the 24 civic groups who have sponsored tables and will be ready to hand out candy and prizes to all of the children.

Every year they offer this safe alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating and every year I ask myself the same two questions: 1. Do the organizers get how many kids show up at this event to load up on free candy and then go home and hit the streets? Every year I comment to kids who come to the door how much territory they must have covered because their bags are so full and every year a number of them tell me they got most of it at Project Safe Halloween. 2. I have lived here more than thirty years. Every year there are tons of trick-or-treaters out and I don't recall anybody ever getting hurt. Why do we need this "safe" alternative?

Are they still having this? The BOE automated phone call says all school events are canceled!

Yes, they are still having this on Friday.

...'Observor''...are ya gonna be there, or what? What are you dressing up as, just so I can look for you? If you haven't attended before, this is pretty Awesome. And we don't always "need" a safe alternative for ANYTHING...but we're pretty lucky when enough people believe in something, work for it, and make it happen...especially for the little ones? ...Bring candy, please!!!

If people want to have a Halloween party, fine, but I only volunteer for things where my efforts will make a real difference. Project Safe Halloween does not fulfill its stated purpose so I will put my spare time toward things that do.
