Wenonah Hauter Author of Foodopoly

Owner of an organic farm in Virginia, part of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) movement, and the executive director of Food & Water Watch based in DC, Wenonah Hauter examines the control of our food supplies by a small number of multinational corporations in her new book, Foodopoly:The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America. She shows that this has led to the economic stagnation of rural communities in the US and famine overseas. Powerful lobbyists have ensured that US policies favor Kraft, ConAgra, Tyson and Cargill over independent farmers and food processors. Though applauding the local food movement, Hauter believes that we cannot shop our way out of this crisis, and that in order to regain control of our food, we must also take political action. Dennis Pierce, Director of Dining Services at UConn whose column “From the Ground Up: Buying Local in Connecticut” appears monthly in Neighbors will introduce Hauter.
