SlutWalk UConn: March to End Victim Blaming

The 2nd annual "Slutwalk UCONN: A March to End Victim Blaming" will be held on October 5, 4-6pm outside the Student Union on Fairfield Way.

The 2nd annual "Slutwalk UCONN: A March to End Victim Blaming" will be held on October 5, 4-6 p.m. outside the Student Union on Fairfield Way. SlutWalk is sponsored by the UCONN student organization Revolution Against Rape, whose motto is "Because we've had enough."

SlutWalk is a global movement which started in Toronto, Canada in April 2011 after a York University police officer told a group of students that,“women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” A group of York University students was so incensed by this statement that they decided to hold an event in protest, and the SlutWalk movement was born.

Unfortunately, sexual assault and the tendency to blame victims is a worldwide issue. It is estimated that one in four college women will be the victim of sexual assault or attempted sexual assault during their time on a college campus (RAINN.org). With that staggering statistic it is clear that this may affect our significant others, sister, brothers, parents, cousins, friends, and loved ones.

Because UCONN and our community at large is affected by sexual assault and victim blaming, we believe that it is our duty to help turn the tide in favor of survivors, one person, one attitude, at a time. On October 5th, 2012 we will unite our community to stand together against sexual violence and march to say that we've had enough.

No, North Korea isn't making me nervous. They're just a bunch of big mouthed small minded windRead More bags. What really makes me nervous are the politicians currently in power around here, namely Dan Malloy and Barack Obama. They make me plenty more nervous than Kim Jong Un...

ADHD is a real disorder but is way over-diagnosed. When a boy isn't engaged (bored, not challenged),Read More he's slapped with a label. Sometimes drugs are appropriate, other times it could mean that he needs to move up a grade level or be stimulated in another way. But other times its just covering problems up. I'd like to know what other countries do that diagnose ADHD.

Why not name Marriage between people of the same sex "Gayrriage" and make them as valid asRead More marriage. It may keep more people happy.

And there is the great thing about the Internet. I came here (just found Patch the other day) forRead More some civil discussion about local events with people in my community and not one post later it devolves to, essentially, name calling by anonymous users. It’s the most perfect constant in the universe. Anyway, no, 17 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things, but this is not the 1950’s. And I don’t see why in this case it’s Bill Clinton’s values. He signed the law, but I fail to see how that effects the current discussion. It would seem to be the values of the country as whole that are changing.
