Happenings Down The Hill: Columbus Day Soccer Tournament Comes to Town for the 23rd Year

Local soccer tournament this weekend.

The Columbus Day Soccer Tournament comes to Windham, Willimantic, and Columbia on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend. This youth soccer tournament, hosted by Columbia Windham Soccer Alliance, offers a tournament setting for youth teams from throughout Connecticut, with teams playing multiple games on both days of the weekend, 10/06/12 and 10/07/12.

CDT Committee members have been meeting since mid-August to bring the 23rd annual tournament back to fruition after it had a one-year hiatus. Tournament director Jerry Hughes mobilized a committee of 12, some new and some veterans, to revive the tournament from what looked like its sure demise in 2011. Committee members are Julie Hughes, Laura Young, Leo Desautels, James Young, Brad Earnest, Paul Croteau, Caroline Nowyckyj, Dawn Gorgone, Felicia Acerbo, Dick Szegda, and Sebby Randazzo.

A final total of 84 teams from 40 different towns/clubs will compete at fields in Columbia, Windham, and Willimantic. Information about the tournament can be found online www.cwsoccer.org.

Besides providing the opportunity for young players to compete in a tournament setting, Columbia Windham Soccer Alliance's Columbus Day Tournament is a boon for local businesses such as Harp On Church, City Side Deli, Bagel One, Cinco De Mayo, Main Street Cafe, and many other Wiliimantic and Windham restaurants.

Besides checking the tournament website, you can get additional information about the local sports scene or this tournament from me, Peter Leeds, peripatetic bike rider and walker and also soccer referee and coordinator, with a Facebook location of Peter Leeds Not Just The Sports Guy (because I am not).
