The Windham Theatre Guild proudly presents a haunting, award winning, record breaking musical that’s rarely performed.  Opening Friday, November 1st at the Burton Leavitt Theatre, it’s Blood Brothers, with book, music and lyrics by Willy Russell.  First opening in 1988, Blood Brothers ran for 24 years, earning the honor as the 3rd longest running work of musical theatre in the West End District of London.

Blood Brothers is the story of Mickey and Edward, two twin brothers who are separated at birth and raised in different homes. Eventually they become best friends of the closest kind, “blood brothers”. However, the fact that they are related is concealed by their mothers who strive to keep them apart for superstitious beliefs.

Their lives continue to intertwine, although the deep divisions between the privileged life of Edward and Mickey’s poverty-stricken existence are apparent.  As adults, they are caught up in a love triangle with Mickey’s childhood sweetheart Linda. This story is told with great humor as the kids grow up and delivers a powerful message with the help of a wonderful soft-rock score. For Victor Funderburk, Windham Theatre Guild’s President and Artistic Director, it has been a dream to one day get a chance to direct this unforgettable musical.  After seeing the production twice in England, Victor saw and felt first hand how Blood Brothers shook the souls of those who experienced it.  Every night, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house…and it was obvious why this show was nicknamed “the standing ovation musical”.  Musical Director for the show is the wonderful Ken Clark.
