Mansfield Father Charged With Assaulting His 5-Month-Old Baby

David Saegaert was taken into custody following an investigation after his baby sustained injuries in May.

State police have arrested a Mansfield man accused of assaulting his 5-month-old baby.

David Saegaert, 19, 414 Warrenville Road, was taken Monday into custody on charges of first-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Troopers from the Troop C barracks in Tolland, and the Eastern District Major Crime Squad, began the investigation on May 31 after getting a report of a 5-month-old infant who received numerous unexplained injuries, according to a police press release.

The injuries included "new fractures as well as old ones" that the baby sustained in the process of healing, the release said.

The Department of Children and Families was involved in the investigation and took temporary custody of the child. Police said the child is expected to make a full recovery.

Detectives conducted an investigation which ultimately lead to Saegaert's arrest on a warrant. Police said he was the father of the child.

Saegaert was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared in Danielson Superior Court on Oct. 22.
