UConn Men's Basketball Player Charged With Drug Offenses

UConn men's basketball forward Jamal Coombs-McDaniel was arrested on Thursday.

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, 21, a University of Connecticut men’s basketball player, has been arrested on drug charges.

On Thursday evening, UConn Police responded to 18 Jonathan Way to investigate a narcotics complaint, according to an arrest report. Further investigation revealed that Coombs-McDaniel, a sophomore from Dorchester, MA, and two other individuals, were in possession of 5.6 grams of marijuana, a marijuana grinder and a package of cigars used to smoke marijuana, according to police.

The two other individuals were identified as Shakwaan Ishmale Simpkins, 19, of 39 Dunlap St., Boston, MA and Stanley Darnel Winn, 19, of 39 Dunlap St., Boston, MA.

All three were charged with with drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance, according to arrest reports.

Bail was set at $500 and Coombs-McDaniel is scheduled to next appear in Tolland Superior Court in Rockville on May 5.

The UConn Athletics Department said it was aware of the arrest Friday morning, but had no comment at this time.
