UConn Post-Game Celebrations Gone Sour

University of Connecticut Police made nearly two dozen arrests in an eight-hour span.

University of Connecticut Police said that 23 criminal arrests were made during post-game celebrations of the UConn men’s NCAA basketball championship win over Butler. 

According to police, the arrests were made between the hours of 8 p.m. Monday and 4 a.m. Tuesday, and more than half of the them (13 arrests) had no university affiliation.

  • Criminal trespass
  • Criminal mischief
  • Interfering with a police officer
  • Breach of peace
  • Inciting riot
  • Reckless burning

UConn Police said they are currently investigating various reports of vandalism including two overturned motor vehicles, a piano that was set aflame and a number of broken windows.

As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the department had not released reports of individual arrests.

Connecticut State Police - Troop C reported the following arrests related to the post-game festivities:

Matthew Goldstein, 25, of 65 Stonehedge Dr., South Burlington, VT, was arrested by state police and charged with breach of peace. 

Andrew Chapin, 22, of 711 Bucks Hill Rd., Southbury, was arrested by state police and charged with breach of peace.

Correction (4/6/11): Due to an inaccurate, early report, an earlier version of this story stated that Goldstein was a Southbury resident and that he and Chapin had been charged with disorderly conduct. Official police reports indicate that Goldstein is a resident of South Burlington, VT and both men have been charged with breach of peace.
