Campaign Notebook: McMahon, Murphy to be Richest or Poorest

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Fifth District

Dan Roberti (D): Due to frontrunner Chris Donovan's (D) campaign contribution scandal, polls say that Roberti is now the lead Democratic candidate, reports CT News Junkie

Mark Greenberg (R): Mark Greenberg has suggested moving Litchfield's Stop & Shop from its 24,000-square-foot West Street location to a 39,000-square-foot building in the Village Green Plaza. The Preserving Litchfield Action Network (PLAN) is fighting this proposal, reports The Litchfield News.

Second District

Joseph Courtney, (D): Courtney has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., in New London to  announce legislation that would ensure Medicare coverage for the costs of skilled care for seniors. Joining Courtney will be families who have incurred large medical bills as a result of having to pay for skilled nursing care for themselves or family members. The bipartisan bill would fix an arbitrary Medicare policy that requires a beneficiary to stay in the hospital at least three days before Medicare will cover skilled nursing care. Currently, patients who receive hospital care on “observation status” do not qualify for this benefit, even if their hospital stay lasts longer than three days.

Daria Novak (R), Paul Formica (R): Novak and Formica were featured in a political profile this week in a story in the Norwich Bulletin. Novak said she is upbeat about her chances and told the paper she’s the front runner going into the GOP primary on Aug. 14. Formica said he’s also confident about his chances, but added any Republican who faces off against Democratic incumbent Joseph Courtney is going to work hard to overcome Courtney’s reported campaign war chest of $1 million.

Senate

If the general election is between Republican Linda McMahon and Democrat Chris Murphy, Connecticut will have to choose either one of the richest or poorest senators, reports Danbury News Times. McMahon's net worth is approximately $232 million, while Murphy has a negative net worth of $367,000.

Third District

Rosa DeLauro (D): DeLauro attended President Obama's fundraiser in Stamford, reports NBC Connecticut. "It's wonderful to have the president here so he can speak directly to the people of Connecticut," she said.

Wayne Winsley (R): Winsley attended the Tea Party Rally in Stamford on Monday, according to his Facebook page

Fourth District

Jim Himes (D): Women for Himes is holding a launch party on September 4. It will be a viewing party for Michelle Obama's keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

Steve Obsitnik (R): Obsitnik's "Sandwich Tour" stopped at Chip's in Fairfield. He posted pictures on his Facebook page

No, North Korea isn't making me nervous. They're just a bunch of big mouthed small minded windRead More bags. What really makes me nervous are the politicians currently in power around here, namely Dan Malloy and Barack Obama. They make me plenty more nervous than Kim Jong Un...

ADHD is a real disorder but is way over-diagnosed. When a boy isn't engaged (bored, not challenged),Read More he's slapped with a label. Sometimes drugs are appropriate, other times it could mean that he needs to move up a grade level or be stimulated in another way. But other times its just covering problems up. I'd like to know what other countries do that diagnose ADHD.

Why not name Marriage between people of the same sex "Gayrriage" and make them as valid asRead More marriage. It may keep more people happy.

And there is the great thing about the Internet. I came here (just found Patch the other day) forRead More some civil discussion about local events with people in my community and not one post later it devolves to, essentially, name calling by anonymous users. It’s the most perfect constant in the universe. Anyway, no, 17 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things, but this is not the 1950’s. And I don’t see why in this case it’s Bill Clinton’s values. He signed the law, but I fail to see how that effects the current discussion. It would seem to be the values of the country as whole that are changing.
