Campaign Notebook: Murphy Enlists Women to Criticize McMahon

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Senate

Chris Murphy (D) and his supporters are attempting to paint Linda McMahon (R) as an anti-woman, Tea Party activist with similarities to Sarah Palin. A press conference in Hartford with Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and other women sought to “highlight the dangers of wrestling mogul Linda McMahon's reckless, anti-women record and agenda,” according to a press release.

The McMahon campaign called it a “campaign stunt direct from fantasyland.”

“Congressman Murphy’s Factory of Falsehoods continues to manufacture claims that are not only beyond belief, but are easily discredited,” McMahon campaign manager Corry Bliss said in a statement. “The facts are: Linda McMahon is a pro-choice candidate who supports access to contraception. Congressman Murphy’s continued insistence that Linda is anything other than pro-woman is ludicrous.”

The Greenwich Time looked into the Democrats’ criticisms of McMahon. They found lukewarm support of McMahon from the Tea Party.

Third District

Rosa DeLauro (D): Everyone in Connecticut has an opinion about the retirement  University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun. DeLauro offered this message on Twitter.

Congrats to #jimcalhoun on a great career. Looking forward to seeing Kevin Ollie and future #UConn teams continue his legacy

Wayne Winsley (R): A blog post by Winsley titled “Facts are Stubborn Things” notes that Connecticut has fewer jobs now than in 1998.

“Obviously, my opponent, Incumbent DeLauro has failed the citizens of the 3rd Congressional District,” Winsley wrote. “Equally obvious - given her seniority among the CT Delegation to the US House - she has also let down all the people of Connecticut outside the 3rd District. “

Fourth District

Steve Obsitnik (R) and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D) are scheduled to debate several times before the election. The first will be on October 10 in Stamford, sponsored by the World Affairs Forum. The Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce and the Stamford Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a debate on October 18 in Norwalk. The last debate before the election will be October 28 in Wilton, sponsored by the League of Women voters. A fourth, according to Hersam Acorn newspapers, will be sponsored by the AARP but no date has been set.

Fifth District

The race between Elizabeth Esty and Andrew Roraback could be getting even more competitive. The National Republican Campaign Committee named Roraback a “Young Gun,” reports the CT Mirror. This means he’ll be getting some help from the national organization, which sees the race as close.

Elizabeth Esty has already been receiving aid – and negative attack ads against Roraback – from the Democratic counterpart.

No, North Korea isn't making me nervous. They're just a bunch of big mouthed small minded windRead More bags. What really makes me nervous are the politicians currently in power around here, namely Dan Malloy and Barack Obama. They make me plenty more nervous than Kim Jong Un...

ADHD is a real disorder but is way over-diagnosed. When a boy isn't engaged (bored, not challenged),Read More he's slapped with a label. Sometimes drugs are appropriate, other times it could mean that he needs to move up a grade level or be stimulated in another way. But other times its just covering problems up. I'd like to know what other countries do that diagnose ADHD.

Why not name Marriage between people of the same sex "Gayrriage" and make them as valid asRead More marriage. It may keep more people happy.

And there is the great thing about the Internet. I came here (just found Patch the other day) forRead More some civil discussion about local events with people in my community and not one post later it devolves to, essentially, name calling by anonymous users. It’s the most perfect constant in the universe. Anyway, no, 17 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things, but this is not the 1950’s. And I don’t see why in this case it’s Bill Clinton’s values. He signed the law, but I fail to see how that effects the current discussion. It would seem to be the values of the country as whole that are changing.
