Formica Wins Endorsement

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

President

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has President Barack Obama beat when it comes to fundraising in Connecticut – at least for now. Polls show that Obama maintains a lead in Connecticut, and a fundraiser could push Obama ahead when it comes to money raised in the state. Romney raised $4.8 million from Connecticut residents so far compared to Obama’s $2.8 million, according to the Associated Press. A could net Obama $2 million when the president meets with Hollywood celebrities and donors willing to shell out $35,000. Nationally, Romney outraised Obama by $101 million to $75 million, according to the LA Times.

Second District

Paul Formica (R): The Hartford Courant has endorsed Formica in the Republican Primary for the Second District, calling him a pragmatist who has done a fine job running East Lyme, where Formica is the first selectman.

Joseph Courtney (D): Courtney today awarded service medals to Gregory Potts, a Vietnam veteran from Willington. Courtney gave Potts the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V,” the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star. Courtney said Potts had never received the medals he earned when he separated from the Navy.

Fifth District

Elizabeth Esty (D): Esty has been endorsed by the Hartford Courant, Danbury-News-Times, and The Register Citizen in the Democratic primary, reports The Register Citizen. Each of these endorsements referenced Democratic rival Chris Donovan's campaign contribution scandal.

Justin Bernier (R): Bernier appeared on The Real Story on Fox CT on Saturday.

U.S. Senate

Chris Murphy (D): The Day endorsed Congressman Murphy in the Democratic primary because "Mr. Murphy is the better politician. He is more affable, able to make his point in a debate or discussion without coming across as strident, quick to introduce personal anecdotes to make confusing, multifarious policy more understandable. These skills count in an election."

Linda McMahon (R) released a new ad attacking Republican rival Christopher Shays, reports the Norwalk Citizen. It says Shays is a "career politician" and promotes herself as a job creator.

Third District

Rosa DeLauro (D): DeLauro, along with Representative George Miller, submitted an op-ed to Politico emphasizing the importance of food stamps and other legislation that provides aid for Americans struggling to afford food.

Wayne Winsley (R):  that he will be holding an open Candidate's forum on Thursday, August 9th at 7 p.m. at the East Haven Senior Center.

Fourth District

The Connecticut Mirror reports that the race between Steve Obsitnik (R) and Representative Jim Himes (D) is "becoming increasingly heated." Many attacks have stemmed from the candidates' attempts to win over independents.
