To the Editor,

I have lived in Mansfield since 1958, except for three years when I went to Brooklyn to teach---the other Brooklyn. Then I came back, married. My two kids and my three local grandchildren have attended more schools in Mansfield than there are now.

I‘ve been on the Town Council for 10 years. Up until recently I was Chair of the Finance Committee, and I serve on it now; I’m also on the Four-Corners Committee.

I might mention that years ago, I, as then-chair of the Finance Committee, and others, argued that casino money not be used to lower Town taxes but, rather, should be used instead for special projects. Recently, this money has dropped considerably. If it had been used for taxes, our taxes now would have been catastrophic. Now, and in the future, our major worry is financial. I worry that the coming year and even the next one, will be very hard for us, for the State, and for the country.

Also during my years on the Council, I have supported the Community Center (my name is emplaqued [I like that word] in two places in its lobby), changes in the fire departments, the Storrs Downtown, the Four-Corners, and other changes; some of these things have led to great controversy, and I have tried both to support my causes and to diminish harsh criticism. Supporting my causes and diminishing criticism, I have actually often succeeded.

Thank you.

Carl W. Schaefer II
