Mansfield Officials Ask Residents to Stay Home, Safe

Mansfield is currently under a state of emergency due to Hurricane Sandy, Town Manager Matthew Hart said.

Have a shelter in place, stay home and minimize your travel.

That was Mansfield Town Manager Matthew Hart's main message to local residents Monday regarding Hurricane Sandy.

Hart said the town will open a respite center at the Mansfield Community Center as soon as the winds abate and it is safe to do so.

“We would open it now, but we’ve been advised by the state to minimize travel,” Hart said.

"Safety is key," added Fran Raiola, Mansfield's assistant director of emergency management.

While the Community Center won't serve as a place for overnight lodging, residents may utilize the space as a place to grab a hot cup of coffee, charge up their electronics and shower.

If the need arises for an overnight shelter, the American Red Cross will open a regional shelter at E.O. Smith Regional High School, Hart said.

The town will continue to monitor the track of the storm throughout the day and adjust to the community's needs accordingly.

“We appreciate everybody’s cooperation," Hart said.
