Public Hearing on Proposed New Terminal B at Bradley International Airport Today

State officials want to gather public comment on the proposal for a new terminal where the unused Terminal B is now located.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is holding a public hearing Thursday, Aug. 2, on a proposed new terminal at .

The hearing is being held at 7 p.m. at the , 34 Perimeter Rd., Windsor Locks. The department announced the hearing in a July 2 press release.

State officials are seeking comment on the proposal to building a new terminal where the unused Terminal B now sits. The proposal calls for a 19-gate terminal, with two gates for international wide-body planes, to meet future capacity needs.

The proposal is the result of preliminary engineering and architectural evaluations of alternatives for developing airport facilities that could satisfy future air travel demand at Bradley, consistent with the objectives identified in the 2005 Airport Master Plan Update for the airport, officials said.

State and Connecticut Airport Authority officials have said no determination on whether to move forward with the project has been made.

“The demand isn’t there yet,” Robert Bruno, chief engineer for the state Department of Aviation, said at a recent CAA meeting. “We’re just showing future designs.”

The proposal shows the whole potential for passenger growth at the airport in the future,  CAA Chairwoman Mary Ellen Jones said.

“It’s our duty to develop the demand that would warrant a new terminal, but it’s not there yet,” Jones said at the authority’s July meeting.

The design also proposes building a new garage facility that would also house consolidate car rental center.

Construction would be done in phases. The parking garage/ConRAC and most of the roadway network would be constructed in an initial phase since demand for the parking garage/ConRAC facility already exists for passengers arriving at Terminal A.

According to the Environmental Assessment/Environmental Impact Evaluation, the new Terminal B would be constructed in two later phases – an initial segment of Terminal B and the upper roadway (viaduct) serving Terminal B, would be constructed in a second phase with an estimated completion date of 2018, while a second segment of the terminal would be constructed in a final phase, which is anticipated by 2028 (i.e., full-build). Terminal construction phasing will also be based on any updated demand forecasts.
