Report: Storrs Center Workers Under Investigation

Reports from the Hartford Courant and The Bulletin of Norwich say a recent raid on the site revealed various workplace violations.

State labor officials are looking into potential workplace violations at Storrs Center, according to a report from the Hartford Courant.

Citing sources close to the investigation, the Courant reports that Allstate Interiors, a drywall subcontractor based in Monroe, NY is at the center of the investigation.

A similar report that appeared on The Bulletin of Norwich on Nov. 10, states that an Oct. 17 raid of the work site turned up 18 undocumented workers employed by the New York-based company.

Allstate Interiors describes itself as “a classic American success story,” on its Web site, with a full-time staff of 35 workers that “draws from a talent pool of up to several hundred installer-subcontractors, so we can ramp up quickly to meet even the tightest deadlines.”

In a move to hire locally, Storrs Center Alliance and Education Realty Trust, together with Erland Construction, has  in the past for those interested in gaining employment in the construction of the first phases of Storrs Center.

Storrs Center is intended to be a mixed-use town center located adjacent to the .

Leyland Alliance LLC, of Tuxedo, NY, is the master developer of the $220 million project. About 70,000 square feet have been designated for the street level of the mixed-use buildings. When completed, it would give Mansfield new retail, restaurant, office and residential development.

The Mansfield Downtown Partnership has reported that the initial phases of construction, which includes pedestrian walkways, green spaces and conservation areas, will be completed in 2013. 

Co-developer Education Realty Trust, Inc. (EDR), based in Memphis, TN, will reportedly manage the approximately 290 residential units, while the retail and commercial space will be owned and managed by Storrs Center Alliance.
