Community Members Share Their Vision for the Future of Mansfield

What’s your vision for the future of Mansfield?  This was the topic of discussion at the Mansfield Tomorrow Community Visioning Workshop held Saturday March 9 at E.O. Smith High School.  Approximately 90 people attended the workshop and provided input by drawing on maps, voting on various topics, and writing personal vision statements.  Community members who were unable to attend the workshop can provide input through the Mansfield Tomorrow website, www.mansfieldtomorrow.com.

Mansfield Tomorrow is a Town initiative to shape the future of Mansfield through an updated comprehensive plan and improved zoning. Mansfield Tomorrow will help us preserve what’s best about Mansfield, face the challenges of tomorrow, and move community priorities forward. With important projects like Storrs Center, the UConn Technology Park, and extension of public water and sewer service to the Four Corners area already in the works, Mansfield needs a plan for what’s next – a plan that gives us the vision, the strategies, and the tools to become the 21st century community that we want to be.

The workshop began with a presentation on current conditions and trends in Mansfield.   Participants then used keypad polling to provide feedback on vision statements from Mansfield 2020, the strategic plan the Town adopted in 2008.  Next, participants wrote their personal vision statement for the Town and worked in small groups to discuss refinements to the Mansfield 2020 vision statements.

The workshop continued with a “visual preference survey,” where participants viewed pictures illustrating different types of housing and commercial development and used keypad polling to indicate how much they liked or disliked each picture.  The workshop concluded with a second round of small group discussions, where each group drew on a map of Mansfield to indicate where they would like to see different types of development.
