A biking accident Saturday forced Calhoun to undergo surgery to repair a fractured hip.

The following information was provided by University of Connecticut Athletic Communications:

men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun underwent successful surgery Saturday night to repair a left hip fracture suffered in a bicycle mishap earlier in the day.

Calhoun was resting comfortably Sunday at John Dempsey Hospital at the UConn Health Center in Farmington. He is expected to be released from the hospital within the next few days and will recuperate at home.

Calhoun was riding near his home in Madison when his bike slipped on some sand, causing the fall. The accident forced Calhoun to miss the weekend activities of the Jim Calhoun Celebrity Classic, including his Charity All-Star Game at Mohegan Sun Arena, which was played Saturday night before 7,241 fans and featured 36 of Calhoun’s former UConn players and eight of his former and present assistant coaches.

Since its inception in 1999, the Celebrity Classic has raised more than $6 million
for the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiac Center at the UConn Health Center.
