The Neag School of Education is hosting the 10th annual Northeast Media Literacy Conference, “News Literacy in a Digital Media Age,” on Friday, March 16, in the Bishop Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s event will explore the connection between understanding digital media and the rapid spread of new technology. A key emphasis will be to help youth grow from being critical consumers of media to being effective communicators through the media.
Conference sessions include such topics as: Toxic Media: Sex, Violence and Teens; International Perspectives and Programs in News Literacy and Media Education; Bringing the World to School: Integrating News and Current Events into the Elementary Curriculum; No News is Today’s News: Helping Youth Critically Navigte Information in Their Daily Lives; Web 2.0 Tools to Enhance Media and News Literacy fro the 21st Century; Advertising to Children: The Effects of Host Selling; Arab Spring Revolutions and Haiti Tragedies: Dialectic Intersections of the US Nationalism and Business interests;
Keynote speakers:
· 9 – 10 a.m. – Dr. Kathleen Clarke-Pearson – “The Impact on News Media Upon Young Children’s and Youth’s Perceptions of Their World Today.” She is a distinguished pediatrician and expert on the impact of the mass media upon young children, a media literacy leader for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and AAP award-winner for developing a statewide initiative to limit television viewing by children.
· 1:10 – 2:10 p.m. Howard Schneider “A Report From the Front: What I’ve Learned Teaching 7,000 Students to be Smarter News Consumers.” He is a nationally recognized speaker, educator, founding dean of he School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, and creator of a landmark news literacy program seeeking to have students across all disciplines become discerning news consumers.
