Uconn reuse trash event

UConn Give & Go is back: May 4 - 8, 2011
The University of Connecticut fills about 50 extra construction dumpsters during the week of student move-outs. For the past two years some of that waste has found new life through the Give and Go program. Organized by individuals from the UConn Office of Environmental Policy, Department of Residential Life, Department of Dining Services, Office of Community Outreach, EcoHouse Learning Community, ConnPIRG Zero Waste Campaign, Green Grads student group, EcoHusky student group, the Town of Mansfield, and Off-Campus Student Services, "Give & Go" is designed to capture re-usable furniture, clothing, appliances, non-perishable foods and other households good that would otherwise be discarded by students vacating the residence halls and apartments.  There are 27 different local agencies and non-profit organizations that will be receiving the materials and putting them to good re-use.  Fifteen collection points will be set up across campus throughout move-out week, May 4 through 8, reduced to four collection points over the May 7 & 8 Commencement weekend. Collection points will be accepting donations from 10:00-5:00 each day.

There has been a tremendous response from student, faculty, staff, and community volunteers and once again, the success of this year's program will depend on recruiting ample volunteers to run the program.
