All blood types are needed. Those with type O-negative blood are urged to make an appointment, as it is considered to be the "universal donor" type.

Just one donation can help save up to three lives, so grab a friend and go make a difference.

Here are some tips for a successful donation courtesy of the American Red Cross:

  • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet
  • Hydrate – drink an extra 16 oz of liquid before and after your donation
  • Have a healthy meal before your donation – avoid foods high in fat just prior to donation
  • Remember to bring your ID!

To schedule an appointment to donate, call the Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit their Web site. Walk-ins are welcome.
