Mansfield Students Join ECSU's Campus Lantern Newspaper

More than 30 percent of the full-time students enrolled at Eastern now participate in at least one club/organization–an increase of almost 10 percent since fall 2007.

The mission of the Campus Lantern is to inform and educate the campus community about news and events on campus, to create a place where students can gather and discuss topics important to them, and to provide a source of valuable truthful journalism for the student body and beyond.

James Haseltine of Storrs, is a member of the Campus Lantern at Eastern Connecticut State University. Haseltine is majoring in History and Social Science.

Rebecca O'Bern of Storrs, is a member of the Campus Lantern at Eastern Connecticut State University. O'Bern is majoring in English.

During the fall semester, the students in the Campus Lantern Club published six issues of the Campus Lantern student newspaper to bring attention to important events and issues on campus. Campus Lantern writers covered everything from on-campus events such as the Salman Rushdie lecture to the Occupy protests occurring on Wall Street and elsewhere. The student newspaper also added a new "Club Spotlight" column to provide students with information about different clubs that are available on campus.

Members of the Campus Lantern believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of a Campus Lantern journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Campus Lantern share a dedication to ethical behavior and responsible reporting.
