Mansfield Students Recognized in State Poster Contest

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill awarded students for their entries on good citizenship.

After combing through entries from more than 500 fourth graders from 50 schools across Connecticut, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced the winners of the office’s 18th Annual Poster Contest.

Sofia Romeo, a student at Annie E. Vinton Elementary School, took third place for her poster depicting "acts of good citizenship" happening in the community.

Lissandra Diaz Olea, Sarah Jaquith, and Laura Lacasse, also students at Vinton, received honorable mention.

“The theme of the contest is ‘Good Citizenship Happening in Our Community’. This contest motivated students to look within their communities and see the democracy occurring in their towns,” said Secretary Merrill in a prepared statement.

“By making children aware of these opportunities within their community at a young age, we can only hope that it encourages the next generation of Connecticut leaders to demonstrate how to get involved in their local community and give back to their city or town. This is how we start civic engagement," she said.
