[Update] Merrill Kidd Resigns From Manchester School Board

Kidd, an embattled member of the board, was expected to serve until 2013.

Merill Kidd, a controversial and, at times, confrontational member of the Manchester Board of Education, resigned from the board Wednesday citing "personal family matters" as her reason for the decision for leaving, according to school board members.

Her resignation is effective immediately, according to school board Chairman Chris Pattacini.

Pattacini made a brief announcement about Kidd's decision at the beginning of the Board of Education's meeting on Wednesday night at the Lincoln Center.

Kidd, a controversial board member who was elected to serve until the fall of 2013, did not attend the meeting. A man reached at her home prior to the meeting said that Kidd was not available to comment.

According to the state judical website, Kidd was arrested by Manchester police on Nov. 9 and charged with disorderly conduct. No further information was available about why Kidd was charged. She is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Dec. 11.

In February, Kidd was accused of cyber bullying after sending alleged threatening and harassing Facebook posts to a fellow board member; Kidd was never charged in the incident. Shortly thereafter, Kidd declined to resign from the board and was instead stripped of all her subcommittee responsibilities by the Democratic majority members on the board; Kidd had been a registered Republican at the time.

In October, Kidd said that the school board was to have met to discuss her performance on the board in a closed-door session, but that portion of the meeting was later removed from the agenda.

Wednesday night, board members did not comment on Kidd's past actions as a member, with Pattacini just saying that "being a board member takes a lot of time.”

“We appreciate her public service. We wish her well," he said.

The school board must now find someone to fill the vacant seat.

According to the board's bylaws, the school board can fill the vacancy by appointment until the next regular election, which is in November 2013.

"Nominations to fill such vacancy shall be made by any Board member that is a registered member of the same political party as the departed member. If no remaining member is a member of such political party, then any member may make such nomination," according to the bylaws.

Kidd was not affiliated with a political party after she withdrew from the Republican Town Committee and the party in March. For this reason the board must find someone who is not a registered Democrat to fill the post.

Board Member Michael Crockett, a the Republican minority leader on the board, will work with the Manchester Republicans to request nominations.

I would like everyone to take a moment and consider the Kidd family before going on with comments that neither help or change anything for anyone. They have been through enough. You comment on bulling but how you are conducting yourselves knowing there are 4 children and a lovely husband hurting from all of this is quite puzzling. My prayers are for this family. They have a very long road ahead of them so please be the Manchester community that supports those in need and not becoming the very thing you state you despise.

What's quite puzzling to me, Manchester Mom, is your apparent belief that pointing out the Manchester BOE will be better served without Kidd is somehow out of bounds. This is a woman who has very openly and drunkenly harangued everyone from fellow board members, to PTA members, folks from the public at large, and now even her own family. Check your phony outrage at the door - perhaps now we can get on with getting Manchester Public Schools back in some sort of shape. Instead of the constant coddling you apparently espouse, let's hold these folks accountable. She held herself up as a public official, now let's just be glad she's vacated that role.

You want to hold the 4 Kidd children "accountable" for what? Being born. I'm not, by any means, stating that the issues of all our children aren't better served with this resignation. I re-read my request and did not see anything like that mentioned. I feel sorry for anyone who has gone through the past year and the wrath of this woman. But a kind BOE member wished the best for this family. I'm sure he did this understanding that the BOE had less then a year of this and the family will have a lifetime of it. So JK124 I am sorry if you felt for one minute I was lessening or as you put it "coddling" the ramifications that the actions of Merrill Kidd brought to the BOE, PTA and the public at large. My intentions were very heartfelt and I should have included all of you along with the family. I'm not the enemy, just a mom looking out for someone kids. Again please, I apologize.

^JK124 your anger and confusion is justified. She is only asking you consider her family instead of more humiliation and be introspective yourself. Especially if it is a public break down that the mean innuendo on here regarding there of is in question? The environment was not a healthy one to begin with. I'm only going on reading and learning what the history is, not on opinion. Some are more venerable to stress then others. Yes I understand that doesn't sound like accountability. If it is accountability you seek, she is paying with her career, reputation, humiliation and her family attend those schools. I was amazed to learn there isn't a rule or formal corrective action for the BOE that allows the board to take action and/or refer to EAP. Is it a systemic glitch? Our leader's leaders I hope work on changing this if it is changeable......
