The Sierra Club, a national environmental organization, has ranked the 16th among the top 50 "Coolest Schools" in the United States, based on energy, environment and sustainability.
According to a statement released by the university, UConn will be featured in the club’s September/October Sierra Magazine for the following initiatives:
- An agricultural waste compost facility that will recycle 5,000 tons of materials each year;
- Spring Valley Farm, a farm-based living community where student residents grow organic produce; and
- construction on the LEED Silver-registered social sciences and humanities classroom building.
According to the university, UConn was ranked 49th in 2010.
