About 470 people turned out at McCook Point Park to compete in the Niantic Bay Triathlon on Sunday, August 5. It was a sweltering day for the two-hour race but everyone seemed ready for the challenge.
- Cristina Colon-Semenza, of Mansfield Center, placed 313th with a final time of 1:34:37.
- Dianne Virga, of Mansfield Center, placed 434th with a final time of 1:53:55.
The race started with a half-mile swim around Niantic Bay. From there it was onto bicycles for a 12-mile ride before ending with a three-and-a-half-mile run and sprint to the finish.
The event drew competitors from as far away as New Hampshire but in the end, the winner was a local man. William Lunn of Old Lyme beat out a number of more highly ranked competitors to win, finishing the swimming heat in 12 minutes, 15 seconds; the bike race in 30 minutes, 1 second; and the run in 18 minutes, 56 seconds, to finish the race in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 50 seconds.
Scott Livingston of Bolton came second with a final time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 4 seconds. Ed Jensen of Middletown, who finished third, was right on his heels with a final time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 8 seconds.
