The Storrs Center Boondoggle

The Storrs Center Pipe Dream is simply a terrible gamble with taxpayers money.

People are losing their homes and jobs and yet our anointed politicians have no problem finding new ways to spend 100's of millions of our hard earned dollars. Governor Dannel P. Malloy finds bus-lines starting from no where and train routes going to noplace and in Storrs we get promised a magical plaza, to be financed by everyone else but us, secretly located behind a strip mall no one but wayward students skipping classes ever patronize.

No matter what nonsense anyone claims or wherever the initial funds come from, projects like Malloy's bus-route-to-nowhere and the Storrs Magical Mystery Center must be paid for by taxpayers somewhere and at sometime no matter who writes the first check or two and whether these things somehow make money (which never ever happens) or not.

Now when you really think about it, if these things were such  great schemes to make money why don't the Denise Merrills, Dannel Malloys and the Joe Courtneys quit politics and become real estate developers or venture capitalists where their superior judgement and intelligence would do us all so much more good by stimulating the economy and giving us all new jobs and great plazas to spend our earnings  at? And, is that what their job is, to transform our town into theme park lites?

If ideas like the Storrs Center were any good private investors who never want to turn down profits, would conjure them up and carry them through all by themselves.  After all, why cut anyone else in on the profit? If you think these politicians are seeing opportunities the private sector can't you are right, they are funding them with YOUR money, not their own!

The FACT that the Storrs Center is a BAD idea is exactly why government must step in, rip away our tax dollars (the majority of the voters take the money from the minority never doubting for a second the morality of all this), and flush it all down the toilet-because the NO ONE would support these type of projects voluntarily unless they were forced to. Our great leaders and frustrated Donald Trump wannabes are forcing us to finance their schemes and they are gambling with our dollars for no good reason. This is why we have government?

The FACT that our local or state governments have excess money to invest is proof positive that they've taxed us too much and taken too much of our money, or intend to (by indebting us) in the future. They should not have extra funds lying around that they can use to speculate with. If they have extra funds to gamble with, it should be given back to it's rightful owners the tax payers, and they can gamble, or not with it.

It's our governments proper role to provide us with the necessities we cannot provide for ourselves and nothing more. Nothing gives these people the moral right to take more money than needed for fundamental necessities and invest them in anything. It's not their money first, and ours second to get what's left after they're done.  If they feel that the Storrs Center was such a great idea, why don't they form their own investment collective funded with their own money? The very fact that even they know it's a loser of an idea is the exact same reason they must enlist public monies.

The same politicians who take your money, build the Storrs Center and smile when they cut the ribbon will be the same politicians who, in two or three decades, will smile as they push the detonator plunger at the demolition of it all, ridding us of an eyesore and saving us from an enormous money pit.
