Celebrate Walktober with Farm Tours at The Farmer's Cow

The farm families of The Farmer’s Cow are celebrating The Last Green Valley’s Walktober 2013 with events at three of its member farms. At each event, visitors will be able to tour these Connecticut farms, meet the farmers, see the cattle and sample some of The Farmer’s Cow fresh local products.  Try the newest item in the dairy case, Chocolate Milk, this season’s crop of Fresh Apple Cider, and The Farmer’s Cow Ice Cream featuring Farmland Crunch, which was created as a tasty way to support farmland preservation efforts in Connecticut.

• This Saturday October 5th, “Much More than Moos” farm tour and ice cream social at Cushman Farms in Franklin from 1 - 3pm.  Visit the cows at milking time, take a walk and enjoy the fall foliage! Listed as #32 on The Last Green Valley’s Walktober 2013 field guide, enjoy The Farmers Cow ice cream and a farm tour that includes hay rides and walks around the fields and through the barns. Visit the cows, see the maternity barn, and tour the milking facility. Cushman Farms features a unique rotary ‘merry-go-round’ that milks 30 cows at a time. Optional add-on hike at 2 p.m. through fields and woods from the milking center to the home farm. The trail hike is easy to moderate, 2.5 miles and not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

• Monday October 14th, celebrate Columbus Day at Graywall Farms in Lebanon with “Cows & Fields.” Celebrate Columbus Day with a farm tour at Graywall Farms in Lebanon. Listed as #71 on The Last Green Valley’s Walktober 2013 field guide, the farm tour starts at 2pm.  Visit the cows at milking time, walk the fields of Graywall Farms’ rolling farm land and learn about milk production, local agriculture and the benefits of Connecticut’s Farmland Preservation Program while enjoying the great views of surrounding fields and woods in fall color.

• Sunday, October 20th, explore “Over the Hill and Through the Woods” at Fort Hill Farms in Thompson. Guided walk begins at 1pm and offers the best views of fall foliage in Northeast Connecticut. Listed as #94 on The Last Green Valley’s Walktober 2013 field guide, the farm tour includes a historic walk through Maple Grove Lane Way and magnificent views from the hilltop fields that overlook three states – Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Stroll Fort Hill Farms’ extensive gardens and the fields that grow the crops to feed the cows of The Farmer’s Cow.
