Fifth annual Catamount Classic Lacrosse Tournament, Oct. 6-7

Benefits genitourinary and women’s cancers research and care at Dana-Farber

Twenty-seven college lacrosse teams will face-off in scrimmages at Thayer Academy from Saturday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 7 at the 2012 Catamount Classic - Lacrosse for a Cure. Nine Division I women’s lacrosse teams including the University of Connecticut, will scrimmage starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 18 men’s teams will take the field starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday at Thayer Academy’s off-campus turf fields.  Proceeds from the event will support genitourinary and women’s cancers research and care at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Genitourinary cancers include testicular, prostate, and kidney cancers.

The Catamount Classic offers lacrosse fans the chance to watch great lacrosse, view leading lacrosse equipment, purchase event gear, and meet Major League Lacrosse professional athletes. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.fanfueled.com or on the day of the event.  General admission is $10, and for children under five, free.  Tickets will grant fans access to either the women’s games on Saturday, Oct. 6, or the men’s games on Sunday, Oct. 7.  The event will be held rain or shine.

The event began in 2008 when University of Vermont Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Ryan Curtis and his wife Kelly founded the Catamount Classic – Lacrosse for a Cure. Ryan and Kelly lived in Boston, where Kelly worked at Dana-Farber in genitourinary oncology, before moving to Vermont. Together, with the help of the UVM men’s lacrosse team, they found a way to raise awareness for genitourinary and women’s cancers at Dana-Farber.

The Catamount Classic has become the premiere fall lacrosse event for New England college lacrosse fans and teams.  In 2011 the event raised more than $23,000 to support both genitourinary and women’s cancers research and care at Dana-Farber, bringing the total event proceeds to nearly $120,000 over four years.  Due to the growth of the Catamount Classic, the name of the tournament will be changed to the Northeast Classic in 2013.  Fans will be able to buy Northeast Classic merchandise and apparel at this year’s tournament.

2012 participating teams include: Women’s division: Boston University, Brown University, Bryant University, Central Connecticut State University, College of the Holy Cross, Marist College, Siena College, University of Connecticut, and University of Vermont. Men’s division: American International College, Bentley University, Brown University, College of the Holy Cross, Endicott College, Hartford University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Long Island University, Merrimack College, New England College, Providence College, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, Saint Michael’s College, Siena College, Southern New Hampshire University, Springfield College, and University of Vermont.

On Saturday, a youth lacrosse clinic will be hosted by Curtis Lacrosse from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  The registration fee is $50, with all proceeds supporting the fundraising efforts of the Catamount Classic. To register for the youth lacrosse clinic visit www.curtislacrosse.com.

Kiss 108 will broadcast live on Saturday and Jam’n 94.5 will broadcast live on Sunday.  Gold Level Sponsors include Adrenaline Lacrosse, lax.com, Jam’n 94.5 and 101.7 FM - The Harbor.  For a complete list of this year’s game schedule, sponsors, vendors, and merchants visit www.catamountclassic.com.
