Students Empowering Communities, Communities Empowering Students

Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of students through skill-based service programs to improve quality of life in under resourced communities.

Dear Community Members,

My name is Eric Thepsiri and I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut. I'm also the current President of Uconn Global Brigades. Please allow me to tell you a little bit about Uconn Global Brigades. We are a fairly young organization but we are quickly gaining momentum and interest. Global Brigades is the largest student run non-profit organization in the world. The unique thing about GB is its made up of students, who are passionate about making a difference by bringing sustainable and high quality initiatives to developing communities. Our current initiatives are education, public health, medical/dental, architecture, micro finance and clean water. It really is an amazing feeling knowing you're making a tangible difference in so many lives. We recently came back from a Medical Brigade in May to Ghana, Africa. I helped to lead a team of 30 students, a physician, physician assistant, nurse and clinical coordinator. We treated over 800 patients in 4 days of our 11 day Brigade. I couldn't be anymore proud of my team. It was an extremely successful Brigade and we are excited to return May of 2013.

Our next Brigade is to Jinotega, Nicaragua. This is a brand new program, incorporating both medicine and public health. We are very excited to be one of the first universities to participate in this ongoing project. The dates are January 5th-13th 2013.

I’ve posted a link to our Ghana album on our facebook page and I encourage you to look through them. I’m asking you to pay close attention to their expressions. You'll notice some with their smiling faces exuding happiness, and an intangible amount of thanks. And others with faces of immense strength, hope and tears praying for a better future. Help UCONN GB in creating that better future!

Therefore, if you wouldn't mind helping us change more lives, please do not hesitate to contact me. I'd be more than happy to sit down and discuss more of our organization with you. Thank you so much for your time and attention.

No, North Korea isn't making me nervous. They're just a bunch of big mouthed small minded windRead More bags. What really makes me nervous are the politicians currently in power around here, namely Dan Malloy and Barack Obama. They make me plenty more nervous than Kim Jong Un...

ADHD is a real disorder but is way over-diagnosed. When a boy isn't engaged (bored, not challenged),Read More he's slapped with a label. Sometimes drugs are appropriate, other times it could mean that he needs to move up a grade level or be stimulated in another way. But other times its just covering problems up. I'd like to know what other countries do that diagnose ADHD.

Why not make them public! The whole public has been on this since begining. We mourned and have hadRead More tribute after tribute. We got to see the faces of the victims, why can't we see the evidence, life and witnesses of a man who did such a hienous act.. I don't get it.

I don't know if this comment was supposed to be serious or not.....but if it is, here's why thatRead More should never happen: http://www.gaelick.com/2011/06/my-marriage-is-equal/16012/

Why not name Marriage between people of the same sex "Gayrriage" and make them as valid asRead More marriage. It may keep more people happy.

And there is the great thing about the Internet. I came here (just found Patch the other day) forRead More some civil discussion about local events with people in my community and not one post later it devolves to, essentially, name calling by anonymous users. It’s the most perfect constant in the universe. Anyway, no, 17 years is not that long in the grand scheme of things, but this is not the 1950’s. And I don’t see why in this case it’s Bill Clinton’s values. He signed the law, but I fail to see how that effects the current discussion. It would seem to be the values of the country as whole that are changing.
