Joseph O'Brien is a free-lance writer after having worked for several newspapers in Connecticut, most recently The Hartford Courant, for 30 years. After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1978 with a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science, he went to work for a small Connecticut daily, the Winsted Evening Citizen, in what was then his home town. Two  years later he was hired by the Torrington Register as county editor and writer. He was hired by the Courant in 1983 where he held a number of editing positions that included bureau assignments in Enfield, Manchester, Middletown and New Britain. He was working as an assistant state editor in charge of the breaking news desk in Hartford when he left the Courant during a restructuring of the news department in 2009. He lives with his wife, Hilary Waldman, and their two children: Jill and Liam, in Andover. He is an Emergency Medical Technician, licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and is certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. He is also a member of the Andover Volunteer Fire Department.
