Rep. Haddad Announces Student Essay Contest

State Representative Gregory Haddad is inviting students to propose a new law.

The following information is provided by Larry Perosino:

State Representative Gregory Haddad (D-Mansfield, Chaplin) is sponsoring a student essay contest for 8th graders in the 54th House District, which encompasses the towns of Mansfield and Chaplin.

Haddad is asking students to submit essays of 750-1,000 words describing their proposal for a new law or changes to a current law.

“We are a society of laws and this is a great way to engage our young people and get them thinking about the laws we have and how they could be improved,” Haddad said in a prepared statement.

Haddad will present the top entries with official citations from the General Assembly and consider submitting the best idea as legislation when the Legislature convenes in February.

“These students are our future leaders and are already developing unique perspectives as they approach their high school years,” Haddad said.

“I’m looking forward to reading the essays because I know there will be some great ideas – potentially even worthy of an actual new law.”

After serving for more than a decade as Deputy Mayor of Mansfield, Haddad is serving his first term in the Legislature as the state representative for the 54th District.

He currently serves as the House Vice Chairman of the Commerce Committee and as a member of the Appropriations and Higher Education and Employment Advancement committees for the 2011 legislative session.
