Summer Programs in Arts and Music at the Community School of the Arts FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STORRS, May 14, 2013 –The Community School of the Arts (CSA) at the University of Connecticut in Storrs is offering a variety of fun and educational half-day and whole-day week-long programs, and mini-workshops for children of all ages beginning the week of June 24. A Day at the Beach is the theme of this year’s Arts Explorers, CSA’s popular week-long visual arts programs where students create drawings, paintings, and paper crafts inspired by shoreline nature. All workshops involve both individual and group processes and build on the basic elements and principles of art. A ceramic workshop will be offered one afternoon each week; and family and friends are invited to an informal art exhibit at 4 p.m. on the final day of each week. Fees for each week are $395 for a full day, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or $197.50 for a half day, either 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.. Free before and after care is also available. Shells and Shorelines will be the focus during the Arts Explorers week of June 24-28. Projects led by Barbara Timberman, Rachel Clark and Sherie Gage will include ship collages, pop-up drawings based on Hokusai’s “The Wave,” modeling clay snails, seahorses and turtles, shoreline prints, finger puppets, zen gardens, faux fossils and printmaking sandcastles. For the Arts Explorers week of June 24- 28 ONLY, CSA is offering a Monday through Friday option (see pricing above) or a Wednesday through Friday option. $250 for a full day, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or $125 for a half day, either 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.. Free before and after care is also available. New this year is Keyboards for Kids led by Sarah Masterson. The week-long workshop will be held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the School of Fine Arts Music Department on main campus. 6-12 year old beginners will learn to play the piano together in a fun and supportive environment, play music games and create music-themed arts and crafts to help them learn to read notes and staffs, play simple rhythms and learn basic piano skills. The fee is $215. Also offered during the week of June 24-28, students ages 10-14 can create both functional (cups, bowls, plates) and sculptural forms in the pottery Wheel Workshop with CSA Instructors Jenn Miller and Sherie Gage from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. for $395. RockShop, led by Nick Cutroneo, is open to all guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboard players and singers. This Rock-n- Roll workshop will teach students how to work as a band and write their own songs while learning new material and some of the classics that changed the face of rock music. The workshop is $475 and will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, ending with a concert on the green at CSA. Weekly summer classes at CSA include Family Clay for ages 6 and up with a parent and, Summer Pottery I and II for teens and adults. Other week-long programs and mini-workshops run through August 2.
