Happenings Down The Hill: Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser February 9 In Windham

Pancake breakfast Saturday

Mission For Mardi Gras is the title of an upcoming breakfast fundraiser.  Restavec Freedom Alliance, BEM Inc., will host a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, February 9, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church on Plains Road in Windham Center (not the St. Paul’s Church in Willimantic).  The menu includes pancakes, of course, as well as eggs, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice.  All proceeds will benefit RFA’s purchases of benches and desks for their school in Haiti.  Donations will also be gratefully accepted.

RFA is an organization working to provide a home to restavec children, children who have been “given” to other families in Haiti and who are actually subjected to slavery.  The children are saved or found and placed in a home and provided with schooling.  RFA currently has two homes in the area of Les Cayes, about five hours outside of Port-au-Prince.  Windham Center resident Ellen Graber Donahue is the local coordinator of RFA and helps organize the trips to Haiti.  Students (including Windham residents Casey Dieter-Leeds and Aly Rouse) and adults alike make these sojourns and work on projects as diverse as playing with the children or building a soccer field when they go on the mission trips.

For more information on RFA, find the organization on Facebook.  https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/rfahaiti?fref=ts.  Information on Mission For Mardi Gras can be found there as well.

In answer to some questions that may be asked by students or staff of the University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University, and / or Quinebaug Valley Community College, Windham is not famous just for its frogs nor is Willimantic known just for its frog bridge.  Willimantic is one of the four communities that comprise the town of Windham:  The villages of Windham Center, North Windham, and South Windham and the city of Willimantic.  Mission For Mardi Grad will be held in Windham Center, one of the villages in the town of Windham, of which the largest community is Willimantic.
